The Cricket World Cup 2011 has really begun. The tenth edition of cricket’s biggest extravaganza is really here, right here in the sub-continent. You have to pinch yourself to believe that the World Cup is really here as it doesn’t look like that it has started.
Maybe it is because of the big teams being perched against the minnows. The opening game was fantastic, to say the least. The co-hosts, Bangladesh and India, battled for a “revenge game” of the 2007 World Cup debacle that saw India knocked out off the group stages. But India got even, as they thrashed the Tigers on Saturday.
Day two of World Cup saw New Zealand strip the Kenyans as they bowled them out for 69 runs. In the second game, Sri Lanka slashed the Canadian as the Lankans won by 210 runs. The best part of the second game was when Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardena scored the fastest ton of any Sri Lankan cricketer in a World Cup, and then he was gentleman enough to get out the next ball. Yes, this is how good the World Cup 2011 is turning out.
The three-time defeating World Cup champions headed to the sub-continent with brimming sun burn lotion and Ricky Ponting, hoping to be the four-peat champions.
Since Australia’s case is not seemingly strong, the only way the team can return with their heads high, back to the Land Down Under is by being judged on the most gracious and well-behaved team of the World Cup.
